To pick the right harness size at PetSmart, start with two quick measurements at home: your dog’s girth (the widest part of the chest, usually right behind the front legs) and the lower neck (where a collar naturally sits). Most harness packages and shelf tags list a size range by inches for one or both of these measurements. Choose the size where your dog’s measurements fall comfortably in the middle of the range, not at the extreme minimum or maximum.
Use a soft tape measure (or a string plus a ruler). For girth, wrap the tape around the broadest part of the ribcage behind the front legs, keeping it snug but not tight. For the neck, measure around the base of the neck (not up near the head). Write both numbers down, and if your dog has a fluffy coat, measure without compressing the fur too much.
In-store, match your measurements to the harness’s size chart printed on the packaging. If the harness lists a girth range, treat that as the primary measurement—fit issues almost always show up in the chest first. When your dog is between sizes, sizing up is usually safer because many harnesses have multiple adjustment points to fine-tune the fit.
Once the harness is on, check that you can slide two fingers comfortably under each strap. The harness should sit centered on the chest, not rubbing the armpits, and it shouldn’t shift dramatically when your dog walks. If your dog can back out of it or it rides up toward the throat, you likely need a different size or style.
For a more detailed measuring walkthrough and fit tips, see this guide: dog harness size guide (how to measure girth and neck).
A harness should be snug enough that it doesn’t rotate or slide, but loose enough to fit two fingers under the straps. It should not rub the armpits or press into the throat when your dog moves.
